Nagoya: India's Pranav Soorma clinched gold in the men's discus throw combined F51/52/53 event with an Asian record, while compatriot Ram Ratan Singh won silver at the Asian Para Games here on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old Soorma, who won gold in the men's club throw F51 event at the previous Asian Para Games in China, sent his discus to a distance of 11.66 metres in his fourth attempt to take the top spot and set a new Asian record.

Singh, 31, produced a throw of 10.35 metres in his second attempt to win silver. Both Soorma and Singh are F51 athletes.

Iran's Alireza Hemami, an F53 athlete, took bronze with a throw of 20.20 metres in his fourth attempt.

Although Hemami recorded a longer distance, he finished behind Soorma and Singh under the Raza Point System, which determines placings when athletes from different classifications compete in a combined event.

The system converts performances into standardised point scores after adjusting for athletes' classifications. This allows athletes with different degrees of impairment to compete together, with final rankings based on points rather than distance alone.

The F51 classification is for athletes with significant limitations in trunk, leg and hand movement, alongside restricted arm movement.

Athletes with similar classifications may be grouped together when there are insufficient competitors in a particular event.

The F51-F57 group covers athletes who compete in a seated position and have lower-body impairments, limb deficiencies, impaired muscle power, restricted range of movement or leg-length differences.
